Best Way to Turn Me Off a Book Sequel?

Changing the main character for the second book in the series.

UGH. I just finished a Sci-Fi novel and was starting the second, only to realize my lead was missing. I thought, “Pfft, he’ll turn up.” Only, he didn’t. So I went to read a review and he isn’t in this book at all.

O.o

What kind of series gets rid of the main character for the sequel?

It appears as though he returns for the third book, but I don’t want to skip a book to get to that; and I also don’t want to read this book without him. It’s not as interesting with this new character.

In fact, the first book wasn’t exactly gripping - I only even finished it because of the character.

Meh.

I think I’ll find a new book or series to read instead. Not worth reading a mediocre book if the character that got me through the last mediocre book is gone.
